Seashore Library: the most remote library in the world

The Beijing-based architectural firm Vector Architects designed the SeaShore Library in the Beidaihe New District. This coastal region in eastern China provides a surreal backdrop for this building, which stands alone on the beach, facing the ocean and exposed to the elements.

The 450-square-meter structure is divided into two floors comprising a bar, a meditation area, a nap room, a terrace, and a reading room, with all seating facing the ocean.

The architects opted for a combination of concrete and raw wood to better reflect the natural atmosphere of the location. The library is designed to allow maximum light to enter through a strip of fixed windows. There is a panoramic view of the ocean everywhere, except in the meditation room, where only the sound of the waves aids your concentration.
