Nicknamed Tunnelbana, Stockholm's metro network, comprising 110 stations, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and successful in the world. It is effectively a giant museum, thanks to works by hundreds of artists: mosaics, installations, paintings, sculptures, etc. Many spaces have been carved out of the rock, even uncovering an archaeological site. In total, no fewer than 90 of the 110 stations have been decorated by artists (a ratio that is not matched in Paris)!
In 1950s Stockholm, pioneers Vera Nilsson and Siri Derkert were the first artists to bring art to the subway. They were supported by Stockholm City Hall, both by left-wing parties and social democrats. This policy is still in place today, with new artistic spaces constantly opening up.
