The Rebirth of a Thai Gem: The Barai Spa Becomes a Full-Fledged Luxury Hotel in Hua Hin
Located about a three-hour drive from bustling Bangkok, the seaside resort of Hua Hin is a historic retreat favored by the Thai royal family. While this stretch of coastline is teeming with prestigious resorts nestled on the sand, few offer an experience as unique as that of The Barai. Its spa, a true architectural masterpiece, centers around a sumptuous lobby in shades of ochre and burgundy, housing 18 exclusive treatment rooms. The entire complex was masterfully designed by the renowned architect and hospitality expert Lek Bunnag.
An oasis of privacy: the concept of a hotel within a hotel
Since its opening nearly two decades ago, this sanctuary of well-being has offered eight luxurious suites. These are designed for guests seeking to fully immerse themselves in Thai relaxation traditions while enjoying the five-star services of the adjacent Hyatt Regency. Marco Avitabile, the general manager overseeing both properties, perfectly captures the spirit of the place: “It’s a true hotel within a hotel. Yet many are still unaware that The Barai houses these magnificent rooms designed by Lek Bunnag.”
An expansion that respects its architectural heritage
Owned by a prominent family in the capital, these two waterfront properties are currently undergoing a major transformation. The Barai is set to become a premier hotel with the imminent addition of 90 new guest rooms. This expansion was designed with the utmost respect for the original architecture, prioritizing low-rise buildings. Starting this summer, future guests will be able to discover a new reception area for check-in, designed to visually echo the spa’s majestic courtyard. The dining offerings are also expanding: in addition to McFarland House, a renowned grill restaurant nestled in a 19th-century pavilion facing the Gulf of Thailand, a new seafood-specialty restaurant, The White Cottage, will open in a newly restored building.
Hua Hin, a popular destination in full swing
Today, the city of Hua Hin attracts both European vacationers escaping the harsh winter and the Thai elite, who continue a tradition of vacationing there that is often rooted in childhood memories. The Barai has naturally established itself as one of the country’s most iconic destinations. It is part of a national trend in which the luxury hotel industry is reinventing itself, following the example of other legendary establishments in Bangkok (such as The Narai, whose spectacular reopening is scheduled for 2028 under the leadership of the British architecture firm Heatherwick). This trend perfectly illustrates the wave of prestigious openings currently sweeping Thailand, with many other major projects in the works.

The importance of architecture in a property’s identity
The success and evolution of The Barai brilliantly demonstrate that hotel excellence is not limited to the mere comfort of the suites. A brand’s soul is often forged through the creation of grand and memorable communal spaces—spaces capable of telling a story, conveying deep-seated values, and weaving an unforgettable visual identity for travelers.
