Since its founding, L’Epée 1839 has been pushing the boundaries of watchmaking by blending tradition, creativity, and technology to transform time into mechanical works of art that are as astonishing as they are functional.

At a time when watchmaking often leans toward discretion, L’Epée 1839 favors controlled eccentricity. Founded more than 180 years ago, this Swiss watchmaker initially crafted precision watch components, music box mechanisms, and travel clocks. Later, it broke free from the classical repertoire with a singular ambition: to transform unexpected objects into true instruments for measuring time.

The Art of Kinetic Repurposing

Based in Delémont, in the Swiss Jura, L’Epée 1839 boasts a history spanning more than a century and a half. Today, its identity rests on a principle of great finesse: creating a dialogue between engineering, aesthetics, and fine watchmaking. Over the past fifteen years or so, the house has brilliantly taken this approach to new extremes. Its creations take the form of cars, robots, animals, or objects inspired by pop culture, thereby shaking up the conventions of clockmaking.

The result, in fact, resembles kinetic sculpture more than a simple timepiece. Each piece remains entirely mechanical, powered by spring-driven barrels. More than a decorative object, it offers a new interpretation of time, where function blends into a fascinating visual spectacle.

Mechanics as Narrative

Among his recent creations, the Belly Tank Racer perfectly illustrates this philosophy. Inspired by 1950s race cars, it translates automotive mechanics into cutting-edge watchmaking language. The exhaust occupies the symbolic position of the driver’s head, while the steering wheel serves as the winding crown. The rivets, spokes, and even the tires have been designed as elements that are both narrative and technical.

According to Arnaud Nicolas, CEO and Creative Director of L’Epée 1839, the manufactory seeks to capture the essence of an object and reinterpret it in the form of a mechanical timepiece. It’s a bold approach: watchmaking is no longer content merely to tell the time; it tells a story and dramatizes the movement.

The Boldness of an Extraordinary Heritage

This penchant for the spectacular is rooted in a long tradition. Historically renowned for its technical advancements, L’Epée has supplied exceptional clocks to royal courts and heads of state. The manufactory has also linked its name to the legend of the Concorde, designing the supersonic jet’s onboard clocks as early as 1976.

While this chapter of history solidifies its prestige, it in no way overshadows its contemporary boldness. In 1994, the brand even earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records with the Giant Regulator, the world’s largest clock, which was exhibited at the Louvre before embarking on a world tour. This achievement exemplifies their signature style: unapologetic exuberance, always underpinned by absolute mechanical precision.

Perpetuating the Unexpected

Today, the manufacture is forging new collaborations with renowned designers, art schools, and luxury brands. Its Creative Art Residency program, as well as its highly acclaimed co-creations with MB&F and ECAL, reflect a clear commitment: to constantly innovate while preserving its watchmaking DNA.

In 2024, the LVMH Group’s acquisition of Swiza (the parent company of L’Epée 1839) further strengthened this momentum. The world leader in luxury aims to protect and promote this exceptional craftsmanship. The challenge for a brand of such originality remains to grow without ever diluting its essence. At L’Epée, the commitment remains unchanged: to design mechanical works of art at the intersection of advanced engineering and aesthetic whimsy.

In a watchmaking landscape where tradition often serves as a refuge, the Delémont-based house embraces risk-taking. It transforms time into a true object of curiosity and conversation, charting a unique and resolutely bold course.
