Belgravia: The Rise of a New London-Style Coffee Haven
In the quiet neighborhood of Belgravia, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, a new spot is redefining the coffee break experience. James Dickson, founder of the Workshop brand, has just opened a flagship location there that serves as the culmination of fifteen years of expertise in specialty coffee. Far from the frenetic hustle and bustle of the British capital, this hybrid space—combining a luxury café and a training academy—celebrates a very personal vision of the English art of living.
The project was born from a simple observation: while London has become one of the global hubs of “third-wave coffee,” it has long drawn its inspiration from Scandinavian or Australian aesthetics. With this new flagship, James Dickson sought to reverse the trend by championing a purely British identity. Here, the customer experience is modeled after the standards of the luxury hospitality industry—a sector the brand knows well, having trained the teams at legendary establishments such as Claridge’s and The Langham.
British elegance as a guiding principle
For the interior design, the 3Stories design studio translated the founder’s vision into three key concepts: London, luxury, and simplicity. The space breaks away from the industrial minimalism often associated with modern roasteries. It features bold nods to the United Kingdom’s industrial and artisanal heritage. The finishes evoke the refinement of Aston Martin upholstery or the impeccable cut of a Burberry trench coat, blending understated opulence with traditional craftsmanship.
The choice of materials underscores this commitment to longevity. Calacatta Verde marble sits alongside burgundy ceramics imported from Bologna, creating a warm and textured atmosphere. Beneath the large arched windows, the deliberate absence of screens and automated control systems invites visitors to slow down. According to Dickson, coffee has become a mass-market commodity where service, a smile, and the glass of water that accompanies the experience are all too often overlooked.
An academy dedicated to the precision of taste
In the basement, the buzz takes on a different character. This is where the Workshop Academy is nestled—a training center equipped with the latest La Marzocco machines. Under the guidance of James Bailey, the product manager, aspiring baristas learn that coffee is a science far more complex than wine. While subjectivity plays a role, 90% of the final quality depends on the precision of the extraction and the rigor of the sourcing.
The company’s signature flavor profile eschews passing trends to focus on “clean, sweet, and juicy” profiles. This commitment is built on direct relationships with producers in East Africa and South America. By guaranteeing purchase prices above market rates, the company enables farmers to reinvest in their infrastructure and plantations, thereby ensuring consistent quality from one harvest to the next.
Putting London Back on the Map of Excellence
With more than 400 professional clients worldwide, Workshop is no longer content to simply supply beans; the brand now exports a certain vision of London-style precision. For James Dickson, the British capital still doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves on the international coffee scene. By creating this space where cutting-edge technology meets the aesthetics of luxury hotels, he hopes to prove that the “daily grind” can, for the duration of an espresso, become an authentic and timeless luxury experience.
