Panerai revives the maritime tradition with the new Luminor Marina Bronzo in aged bronze

Panerai presents the Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678, a bronze watch designed to age gracefully and reflect the brand’s maritime heritage, while featuring a high-performance automatic movement.

Panerai unveils the Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678, the very first bronze Luminor Marina

According to the brand’s website, the case measures 44 mm in diameter and continues a tradition that Panerai first introduced in 2011 with the Luminor Submersible Bronzo PAM00382. According to Timeandwatches and Hypebeast, this new model reaffirms the brand’s commitment to its maritime heritage—which makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?

The brushed bronze case is paired with a blue gradient sandwich dial, which is somewhat reminiscent of the shifting hues of the sea. The dial features large numerals, a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, and luminescent hour markers, while the transparent case back offers a view of the P.980 automatic movement.
The P.980 caliber offers a power reserve of approximately three days and is water-resistant to 50 bar (~500 meters),
according to Panerai—a claim confirmed by Monochrome Watches and Esquire, which is quite impressive.

The Signature of Bronze

Panerai claims to have developed a specific bronze alloy, designed to age with a unique patina while remaining durable. This is interesting because this approach transforms oxidation, in a way, into an aesthetic element that gives each watch a truly personal touch. According to the brand’s history, the use of bronze dates back to its early diving models and symbolizes the brand’s naval heritage.

This model is designed to be worn frequently, and it’s meant to become more beautiful over time, especially if you’re involved in maritime adventures or other physical activities. However, it’s also important to note that choosing bronze comes with certain drawbacks: the patina will evolve depending on use and the environment, which will alter the case’s appearance in a rather permanent way.

Since the Bronzo’s initial release in 2011, expert opinions have been somewhat divided: on one hand, there are those who appreciate its authenticity, and on the other, those who are wary of the maintenance it requires. According to Hypebeast and Timeandwatches, the PAM01678 is seen as a move that is both conservative and bold, giving an iconic watch a slightly more aged look—which may or may not appeal to everyone.

The Luminor Marina Bronzo combines history with mechanical modernity.
Panerai relies on bronze to create a watch that evolves with its owner, while remaining perfectly suited for diving and everyday use. According to the brand and the specialized media, this new release reflects their strategy: to continue cultivating authenticity while refining their movements for greater precision and power reserve.
All of this is pretty captivating, isn’t it?
