Fine watchmaking and Formula 1 share a passionate bond that continues to grow stronger. IWC Schaffhausen embodies this symbiosis through two new exclusive creations designed in collaboration with George Russell, a driver for the Mercedes‑AMG Petronas team. Far from the ostentatious clichés sometimes associated with the paddock, these timepieces feature a stealthy aesthetic and cutting-edge materials, appealing to design purists and thrill-seekers alike.
A Low-Key Aesthetic Inspired by Racing
This capsule collection reinterprets the iconic Pilot’s Watch in two variations: an automatic version and a chronograph. Both models feature a matte black ceramic case, offering a striking contrast to the luminescent blue accents on the dial. According to IWC, this color choice is a direct reference to George Russell’s helmet. This stylistic approach, which prioritizes restraint over excess, gives the watches a strong yet understated visual identity, perfectly suited for both urban and athletic use.
In terms of size, the automatic version maintains a understated elegance with a diameter of 41 mm. The chronograph, which is by nature more imposing, measures 41.9 mm in diameter and 15.5 mm in thickness. Beyond its dimensions, it is the architecture of the materials that captivates: a soft-iron cage protects the movement, while the titanium caseback is engraved with the driver’s race number, “63.” The use of Ceratanium® for the chronograph’s crowns and pushers highlights the manufacture’s expertise, combining the lightness of titanium with the hardness of ceramic.
Precision Mechanics
Under the hood, performance is top-notch. The automatic model is powered by the in-house Caliber 32112, offering a remarkable 120-hour power reserve. The chronograph, meanwhile, is powered by the 69380 caliber with a 46-hour power reserve. The integration of the renowned Pellaton winding system into these calibers ensures optimal energy efficiency—a crucial technical detail for guaranteeing long-term reliability.
While the partnership between IWC and Mercedes-AMG Petronas is long-standing, this is the first time an edition has been specifically named after George Russell. Each watch is equipped with a textured blue rubber strap featuring the EasyX-CHANGE system, subtly evoking the livery of the race cars. Strictly limited to 1,063 pieces each, these timepieces are priced to reflect their rarity and technical sophistication (approximately 14,000 and 19,000 Australian dollars according to initial estimates). More than just a merchandise item, this collaboration successfully strikes a balance between the heritage of pilot’s watches and the avant-garde spirit of F1.
