The Legacy of the Maharajas: Jaipur and Its Passion for Polo

In Jaipur, polo is more than just a sport; it’s part of the soul of the “Pink City.” This equestrian romance took on legendary proportions in 1957, when Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II led India to victory at the World Cup. Today, this historic passion finds a new home with the opening of Polo Palladio. Nestled beneath the stands of the prestigious Rajasthan Polo Club, this exclusive venue is redefining the norms of local social life.

The Palladio Aesthetic: A Breath of Modernity Amid Tradition

Following the success of Bar Palladio and Villa Palladio, Italian-Swiss entrepreneur Barbara Miolini continues her creative conquest of Jaipur. For this third venture, which opened in 2024, she once again enlisted the help of Dutch designer Marie-Anne Oudejans. Far from the subdued conservatism of traditional clubs, the Polo Palladio dares to feature bold geometry and vibrant colors. The custom-made furniture, hand-printed fabrics, and glassware engraved with interlocking mallets pay a vibrant tribute to contemporary Indian craftsmanship while celebrating the splendor of ancient rulers.

A pantheon of memories and glamour

The club is a veritable living museum where the past meets the present. The archives are brimming with treasures: portraits of Princess Diana, photographs of vintage teams, and correspondence from Queen Elizabeth II, who graced a match with her presence during a state visit in 1961. This legacy permeates the walls, evoking an era when princes, heirs to the throne, and international high society gathered along the sidelines. Miolini has skillfully captured this essence and infused it into a décor that is nothing short of spectacular.

A Unique Blend of Styles on the Turf

The Polo Palladio experience reaches its peak on match days. While members watch the game from the stands—served by waiters in turbans offering refreshing cocktails and crunchy chaat—the general public settles onto the grass. This is where the magic of the place lies: a rare social mix where Jaipur’s old families rub shoulders with artists, lawyers, jewelers, and academics. In this relaxed atmosphere, barriers come down and conversations flow naturally.

From the Excitement of the Match to the Delights of the Garden

Once the last mallet is put away, the festivities move to the garden for “high tea.” The menu pays homage to polo’s Persian roots with specialties such as chicken majnoon—spiced pomegranate-roasted chicken served with saffron rice and spicy shrimp. Amid a ballet of sparkling saris, diamonds, and safari jackets, the receptions often stretch into the night under the stars, making Polo Palladio the epicenter of a reimagined Indian night.
